Worked for me Wednesday: Closet Key

Today I am once again hosting a linky party, called "Worked for me Wednesday." The idea is this: music teachers can blog about something that worked for them and link up! The idea should not be a TpT product, but can be a freebie or another resource, like a picture book or folk dancing book, or simply an idea that anyone can try in their own classroom!

Here is my idea for today: one of my favorite singing games, "Closet Key."

To play the game, have one student hide a key while another student hides his/her eyes. Then the student who hid his/her eyes looks for the key while everyone else sings. If the person looking is far away from the key, the class sings quietly, but the closer he/she gets, the louder the class sings (without shouting!)

I just taught this game this past week to my second graders (who were preparing re) and they were SO excited about the game! I usually use a skeleton key prop that I picked up at Joann Fabrics, but I couldn't find it, so I used my car keys. A rather inventive student hid my keys in one of my paper lanterns, like so:

They kept begging for more turns, but I had to cut them off after 4 turns. Too much to do (and it's great to leave them wanting more)! This song is wonderful for teaching re, as well as for teaching prime in form, as the form is abab'.

That's it for today...just a quick and easy idea to try out with your students! If you are a teacher blogger and would like to link up, here are the directions:
  • Save the "Worked for me Wednesday" graphic to your computer, and include it in your blog with a link to this blog entry.
  • Blog about an idea that you tried recently that worked in your classroom.
  • Submit your information by clicking on the button below.
I look forward to reading the ideas! Also, make sure to check out the $3 Thursday event going on Thursday, April 23! If you search $3ThursdayMusicFlashSale you will find many items that are normally priced at $4-6 for only $3! I have a new product I'm posting called "Carnival Music Games, Level One," to practice ta and ti-ti and sol-mi. Click on the picture below to see all of the $3 Thursday deals from other music sellers (and if you don't see many, make sure to check back on Thursday as there should be many more!)

Have a wonderful rest of your week!
